Last weekend produced probably the game of the season so far in the VLeague 1. League leaders, and undefeated in their opening 8 matches, Hải Phòng travelled to Hà Nội T&T , themselves on an impressive run of three straight wins. It was the top two strike partnerships up against each other: Stevens & Fagan for Hải Phòng, against Gonzalo & Samson in the purple of T&T.
Hanoi ran out 2-1 winners thanks to a brace from Samson, including an incredible injury time winner. Errol Stevens struck a stunning free-kick to equalize for Hải Phòng, in what became quite a feisty encounter.
The fans arrive and I found myself to be the only bright yellow T&T shirt amongst hundreds of red away fans.
Hai Phong are renowned for their fans, creating mini San Siro’s at their Lạch Tray stadium and occasionally on the road. Last week’s match was one of those occasions with 5000 fans travelling the 2hrs to Hanoi. Buses, cars and motorbikes formed a huge motorcade with flares being held out of the bus windows. Inside the fans brought along possibly the largest flag I’d ever seen!
